At Rutland High School, we have to potential to implement solar. Dan Mackey from Green Mountain Power has told me that we could put solar panels in a space of 60 ft X 120 ft above the gymnasium. These solar panels would make about 60kW of electricity at their peak, which is 10% of the energy that we use each day. We would see a significant decrease in our electric bill with this. For example, during the month of June we spent $16,851 on our electric bill. By cutting this down by 10% with the use of solar panels, we would save over $1,600 during that month. Say we save $1,500 each month with the energy made by the solar panels, that means that each year our school would save over $18,000! Since the solar panels cost about $180,000 (minus the grant money) we would pay these off in less than ten years!! That means that for the next 25 years our school would solely be making money out of the deal, and your tax dollars can go to more important things, like solving the drug problem in our county. Overall, solar panels would save the school district over a quarter of a million dollars! That is a huge savings! Money should not even be a factor in the decision with that much of a payback.
